In the footsteps of the Danish painter by visiting the most prominent collections.

This tour includes visits to four museum collections, alongside a walking tour of the historic center to retrace the steps of the Danish painter, exploring where he was born and lived in late 19th- to early 20th-century Copenhagen. In Denmark the artist’s works are distributed across eighteen museums. This itinerary focuses on those that acquired the majority of his artwork, namely the Statens Museum for Kunst, the Davids Samling, the Hirschsprungske Samling, and Ordrupgaard. Hammershøi’s work speaks of silence and introspection. His domestic interiors, much like his cityscapes, depict landscapes of the soul, revealing a tendency to 'photograph with the brush'. By offering intimate settings enriched by understated furnishings and interplays of light, these compositions result in unique studies of immense aesthetic power. Hammershøi’s painting 'Interiør med kvinde med klaver, Strandgade 30' ('Interior with Woman at a Piano, Strandgade 30') was sold at Sotheby’s in November 2017 for 39.5 million kroner, becoming the most expensive Danish painting to date. The record was broken in May 2023, when another painting by Hammershøi, 'Interior. Musikværelset, Strandgade 30' ('Interior. The Music Room, Strandgade 30'), fetched 62.8 million kroner. The technical itinerary may be subjected to changes in order to optimize the guided experience. Additionally, designated stops at points of interest (museums, shops, showrooms, galleries), where scheduled, depend on availability for the chosen date and time slot. If the circumstances require it, the chronological order of visits may be modified at short notice, while guaranteeing that all program content remains unaltered.
