The rainbow Copenhagen and not only that
Stories of fighting against prejudice and discrimination.
Anywhere in the world there are stories of discrimination and prejudice, but not everywhere we can also tell about the fight against them. Through this somewhat special visit we want to tell you how Copenhagen, despite the political difficulties, proves to be an inclusive city. We want to tell you about the freedom to profess one’s religious faith. We will show you from outside the largest and most important Danish synagogue. We will tell you about the rescue of thousands of Jews during the German occupation in Denmark and we will mention the choice of opening a Jewish museum in Copenhagen. We will discover Denmark from a socio-cultural point of view, therefore we will deal with topics such as LGBTQ+ rights, homosexual civil unions, adoptions. We cannot help mentioning the names of two heroines who have marked not only the history of human rights, but also the arts: Gerda Wegener and Lili Elbe. Their story was full of courage and unconditional love, and when love is between souls, and not between bodies, it is eternal. The book and movie of the same title "The Danish Girl", which you might have heard about, tell namely about their lives. We will dive into the world of gender equality to let you know what progress had Denmark made, but also what the limitations are, also in relation to other countries in Europe and in the world. We will reach the infamous red light district of the city, which in addition to being an absolutely safe area, is also one of the most fashionable, rich in design shops and innovative restaurants. We will talk about prostitution as a legal profession and the possibilities that make it a crime. In this regard, we will deliver you the absolutely illegal activity which, however, is carried out daily in a specific district of the city. We will reach as far as Nørrebro, a multi-ethnic neighbourhood where we will stop to learn about the history of the Red Square. In that occasion we will also pass by a municipal library, we will talk about a beautiful project of social inclusion and, perhaps, we will hear from afar the call of the Rabbin from the largest and only Shiite Muslim mosque in the country. We will also take a walk inside Assistens Cemetery, where well-known Danish writers were buried such as Kirkegård and Andersen. We will walk to the grave of the first homosexual Danish couple, that was married in DK in 1989, namely Axel and Eigil Axgil. Will we experience all this from the saddle of our comfortable bicycle because it represents the very means of freedom. How could we talk about the fight against discrimination without being completely free from prejudices?

- How long will I have the bicycle at disposal?
In case we rent, the bicycle will be at disposal during the guided tour.

- I know how to bike, but I don’t bike usually. Is it safe to bike in Copenhagen?
More than half of the population commutes by bicycle in Copenhagen. It is completely normal to use the bicycle and the urban design allows to do so in a safe way. The bike lanes are nearly everywhere and they have space enough. Cars watch out for cyclists. However, you need to know how to bike to enjoy the tour with no stress and to not turn the experience into a stressful situation for the others and the guide.
- Is it mandatory to use the helmet?
No, it is not, but it is warmly recommended. You are free to use it or not, but we will ask you to wear it for safety reasons.
- What happens if I hurt myself during the bike tour?
Let us tell you that we have never had accidents during a bicycle tour so far. The pace of the guided tour, thanks to the experience of the guide, will perfectly fit your possibilities. Having said that, if you still hurt yourself (e.g. you fall off the bicycle), we will evaluate the seriousness of the situation on the spot. If necessary, we will call for help; otherwise, we will continue the visit, after taking a short break. We remind you that no cause of this kind is attributable to A Spasso with Elena, therefore for a total protection, we recommend that you make a travel insurance that covers unfortunate events.
