Kronborg Castle, better known as Hamlet Castle, stands in its grandiose monumentality on a sort of promontory, overlooking the Øresund strait. The coast road which leads to reach it is a delightful succession of thatched roofed houses or with sloping roof, modern apartments with glass-covered balcony, and villas with direct access to the beach. The explosion of beauty will occur when, after reaching the town of Helsingør, we will see right in front of us the castle, a jewel representing the Renaissance architecture. Just right there, in the closest point to Sweden, we will enjoy an impressive landscape. It has inspired artists and writers of all ages, not surprisingly. The best known literary work, which came to life thanks to the stories about this place passed down from generations, is Hamlet. It is a tragedy composed between 1600 and 1602 by William Shakespeare. Visiting the royal rooms inside Kronborg, walking along the bastions that surrounds it and descending into the darkness of the casemates, we will put ourselves in the appearance, intrigue, and the ghosts which govern the work by the writer from Stratford. We will take this opportunity to walk the streets in Helsingør by recalling the time when it was a fishing village. You will learn its history through the several changes that it has incurred: from an important maritime trade centre to an industrial city, and then again, to a modern cultural reality.
