Frederiksborg Castle
Into a fairytale.
Can you remember those fairy tales they used to tell you when you were a kid? Those they used to tell you before falling asleep and those you wished to hear again and again? What can you remember of the book that you used to place on top of the blanket when you were in bed? The colour of its cover? Maybe its thickness? The scent of its pages? Or the magical illustrations that made you travel with your imagination?
Dwarves, elves, wizards, witches, fairies, orcs, kings and queens, lowlands and mountains, fortifications and castles. All in pastel colours or outlined with a black line. Starry skies and shining moons, panoramic views from the dizzying heights and flower meadows. Where did those drawings lead you to? You do not know anymore, perhaps, but you just explore new places, and then the memories come back. This is what I thought when I saw Frederiksborg Castle in front of me for the very first time. It happened many years ago. I saw it in all its splendour. Looking at it, all my memories of the book I used to read when I was a little girl immediately became clear. Red bricks, green spires, arched windows, projecting balconies, small lakes. There it is, in that moment the memory of childhood was rising before me. The memory of the evenings when I used to ask to repeat the same stories again and again. I can see the thick orange cover of that magic chest that was my storybook. I feel the smell of echaulypto and menthol of the oil that I used to put on my forehead and chest when I had a cold. That was a typical situation in which I was allowed to stay in my parents big bed and pretend to live in a fortress where the soft cushions represented the defensive walls and my parents were my best bodyguards. Just right to those sweet childhood memories we travel by visiting Frederiksborg, the Castle of Frederik II, who decided to build it as a summer residence in the countryside. The history of the Castle has passed through golden moments like when Christian IV became head of the project and raised towers and reconstructed details based on his taste, in accordance with the style that was fashionable at the time, the late Baroque. However, there has been also time for dark moments such as when in 1859 beauty made room for horror because of the flames that destroyed the castle almost entirely. Luck has it that thanks to the donation by a generous tycoon and the sketches, drawings and paintings made by several artists, it was possible to reconstruct what was devastated by fire. Today Frederiksborg is a Museum of National, which makes it an even more precious jewel given the amount of furniture and works of art kept inside. Its idyllic position, surrounded by a small lake and framed by beautiful gardens, allows you not only to explore Danish history and art, but also to experience the magic of this place in the open air.

- How does this guided tour take place?
This tour can take place by public transportation (train) or by private car or minivan with driver at disposal.
- Is there any difference between taking the public transportation or renting a private car/minivan?
In the first case, there might be longer waiting times, which do not depend on our choice, therefore, A Spasso con Elena cannot be judged responsible in the event of cancellations, strikes, delays. However, if you choose to take the train, you will contibute to reduce environmental impact. Furthermore, the total price will be lower since there will be no need to pay for a completely private service by car/minivan. If you are a group of 10-20 people, it might be convenient (both in terms of logistics and finance) to rent a private minivan instead, though. We recommend you to contact us for further information.
- Will there be much walking distance if I choose for public transportation instead of private?
The benefit of having a private car/minivan at disposal is that we can reach the closest point to destination. However, there is no big difference between a solution and the other in this very case.
- Will there be time for a lunch break?
Yes, we certainly plan to hold a lunch break. In this very case, we plan to have a picnic lunch. You will have to make sure to have food which you can prepare beforehand or buy on spot. In case the weather does not allow to eat outdoor or in case you prefer differently, we will suggest you where to have lunch or to buy something to take away. Our break will be approimately 45-60 minutes long. If you prefer that we take care of arranging your lunch at a Danish restaurant so you can try typical food, let us know. We will be happy to satisfy your expectations. Please remember that in this case, the total duration of the tour will be longer and the final price will depend on the type of restaurant you choose.
- Do I need to communicate how I prefer to arrange the lunch break in advance?
It is very important for us to know in advance how you prefer to arrange the lunch break. In case you choose for the picnic lunch, please remember to prepare it beforehand. Lastly, if you wish us to book in a restaurant, we will have to do in advance so ensure you the availability of the supplier.
- Will the boat tour be done in any case?
It will be part of our tour according to the following variables:
Only in the period between May, the 15th and September, the 15th;
Only if the weather allows;
Only if the service will be available;
Only in case of short waiting time
- Will I have to pay the boat tour no matter what?
Yes, the boat tour is included in the tour, but its price is such derisory that it would not change the total price for this excursion.
- How can I know more about the price for this visit?
We kindly ask you to contact us, but before that, you can read about our rates in the section “Terms and Conditions” on our webpage.
