In the heART of Copenhagen
From unmissable museum collections to must-see art galleries.
The first part of our tour will consist in visiting one art museum, which means that we will be also traveling through Danish history and culture, both present and past. Observing the artworks gives us access to a breadth of curious anecdotes that allow us to understand and appreciate even more the city we are visiting and its people. There are several interesting realities in Copenhagen. We suggest you the following ones in order to have an overview over Danish art from 1750 onwards (you will choose one out of the three).
Statens Museum for Kunst is the National gallery of Denmark and it houses the largest collection in the whole country. This constitutes in works which have been collected over the years starting in 1500. The original building gave space to a modernist extension in 1998. The whole architecture lives now in close contact with the surrounding nature and it delights the many visitors. Here we will go through a chronological excursus in order to draw the development of Danish art.
We recommend the Hirschsprungs Samling to the lovers of hidden gems. It is an intimate temple of art whose collection is characterised by several small studies and fine sketches. We will pay particular attention to the Golden Age - a period of exceptional creative production despite the disruption suffered by fires, bombing and national bankruptcy - and the Skagen Painters - who through their artworks will let us travel towards the north of the country, where the waters of the straits Kattegat e Skagerrak meet.
Lastly, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, founded by Carl Jacobsen, a famous businessman as well as one of the greatest patrons of art that Denmark has known. The museum offers a very diverse collection. Furthermore, it looks like an oasis of peace, where the exploration of art is free from any obligation so the visitor is capable to completely detach from everyday life. In this wide context, we will focus on the discovery of the key artworks of Danish sculpture and the Golden Age painting.
Regardless of the museum that you will choose to visit, our tour will always focus on the key artworks made by Danish artists.
The second part of our itinerary will consider the contemporary art scene. We will visit, in fact, other exhibitions spaces (“kunsthaller”) and some selected art galleries depending on the events and the temporary exhibitions available at the moment of your visit. If you have a specific interest, you are more than welcome to let us know beforehand so we can better satisfy your expectations.
The technical itinerary may undergo changes in order to improve the guided experience. In addition, specific stops at the several sites of interest (museums, shops, showrooms, galleries, churches) - where expected - are subject to availability on the day and time of the visit. The chronological order of visits may be changed even at the last moment if circumstances require it, while maintaining the contents of the program unchanged.

Elena provided wonderful tours of beautiful Copenhagen for my wife and me. We traveled by foot, metro, water bus and bike! I asked to learn about Copenhagen in the 1870’s as that is when my family emigrated to America. I really got a sense from Elena of what is was like in how she showed and described the architecture, art, history and food.

- How does this guided tour take place?
The ideal way to carry out this tour is on foot given the stopping time needed to visit the chosen art museum. We might use the subway to shorten the travel times from a gallery to another during the second part of the itinerary. However, we can arrange it differently upon your explicit request (e.g. bicycle, private car, private minivan).
- Do we need to buy a ticket for the subway?
No worries. We will take care of this. We will purchase a citypass which is valid for 24 hours. You will be able to use it even after the end of our tour. If you have already purchased or you plan to buy a travel card or a daily pass, please let us know so that we do not end by buying extra tickets.
- How do I choose the museum among the three suggestions?
We wrote some details above that should make you take your choice, but if you are still in doubt, contact us and we will give you more information about what each museum has got to offer.
- Is it possible to visit a different museum than SMK, Hirschsprungs Samling and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek?
Yes, it is. Please contact us and let us know more about your interests. We will let you know in which other art museums we are available. We want to remind you that if you are thinking of museums out of Copenhagen such as the Louisiana museum of modern art, you should have a look at our other proposal “Il Louisiana Museum: a dip in one of the most beautiful art collections in the world”.
- Can I visit the chosen art museum a second time with the same ticket after the tour?
During the visit inside the museum, we will try to give you all the most important information, but we will stay there for a limited time, so, if you wish so, you can certainly return within the same day with the same ticket. Just remember to ask for the tickets to your guide.
- Is it possible to focus only on the art galleries and leave out the museum part?
Yes, it is, if this is what you wish. We can focus entirely on the art galleries exploration so to let you have an overall picture about the contemporary art scene.
- How can I know more about the price for this visit?
We kindly ask you to contact us, but before that, you can read about our rates in the section “Terms and Conditions” on our webpage.
