The eco-friendly waste-to-energy plant
And the redeveloped area of Refshaleøen.
The transformation of an area and its redevelopment are not easy jobs and, above all, they require time and patience. Many of the islets surrounding the center of Copenhagen were first developed as military and defence areas. Over the years, as the need for protection diminished and the population increased, these large areas began to house new residential areas, commercial activities and spaces for recreation and well-being. Where once there was a shipyard, we see the majestic Opera House today; the buildings in which the sailors prepared the ropes gave space to, among others, the faculties of architecture and scenography; along the old defensive ramparts lies the Danish restaurant which has won the prize four times as the best in the world according to the renowned British ranking The World's 50 Best Restaurants. We will head towards the new icon of this area, that is located north-east of the downtown area, namely the eco-friendly waste-to-energy plant. If you thought that such a giant could only be found in the suburbs, you are wrong. If you believed that such a work only played a mere functional role, you are wrong too. Thanks to this tour you will discover how you can optimise a large space so that it offers several benefits not only to the resident population, but also to travellers who come from afar to live unique experiences. From the top of the plant we will observe the wonderful panorama nestled between the hills north of Copenhagen and the sea that washes the neighbouring Sweden. Riding our comfortable bicycle we will reach Refshaleøen, a former industrial site, used today as a venue for events and festivals. You will get to know the history of its transformation and visit some of the activities that today find their place there, such as Copenhagen Contemporary | International Art Center and Copenhagen Street Food.
Upon request in advance, you can also bathe in a private stationary hot tub with clean and heated sea water and enter the sauna while enjoying the pleasant atmosphere and the wonderful panoramic view.
The technical itinerary may undergo changes in order to improve the guided experience. - How does this guided tour take place?
The ideal way to carry out this tour is by bicycle. However, we can arrange it differently upon your explicit request (e.g. bicycle, private car, private minivan).
- Do I need to take care of renting a bicycle and a helmet?
No, you do not. We will take care of that. However, if you prefer to rent a bicycle by your own, you are welcome to do so. Just les us know so we can better organize.
- How long will I have the bicycle at disposal?
In case we rent, the bicycle will be at disposal during the guided tour.
- Where will the tour start/end?
In case we rent, the tour will start/end at the rental shop. If you rent, we can agree accordingly.
- I know how to bike, but I don’t bike usually. Is it safe to bike in Copenhagen?
More than half of the population commutes by bicycle in Copenhagen. It is completely normal to use the bicycle and the urban design allows to do so in a safe way. The bike lanes are nearly everywhere and they have space enough. Cars watch out for cyclists. However, you need to know how to bike to enjoy the tour with no stress and to not turn the experience into a stressful situation for the others and the guide.
- Is it mandatory to use the helmet?
No, it is not, but it is warmly recommended. You are free to use it or not, but we will ask you to wear it for safety reasons.
- What happens if I hurt myself during the bike tour?
Let us tell you that we have never had accidents during a bicycle tour so far. The pace of the guided tour, thanks to the experience of the guide, will perfectly fit your possibilities. Having said that, if you still hurt yourself (e.g. you fall off the bicycle), we will evaluate the seriousness of the situation on the spot. If necessary, we will call for help; otherwise, we will continue the visit, after taking a short break. We remind you that no cause of this kind is attributable to A Spasso with Elena, therefore for a total protection, we recommend that you make a travel insurance that covers unfortunate events.
- Is there anything I have to bring?
We kindly ask you to bring with you a bottle of water (possibly to be filled during the tour instead of a disposable one) as most of the tastings do not include a drink. In this way, you will be never thirsty. If you do not bring a bottle, you will be able to buy some during the tour, at your expense. If you wish to include the bath in a private stationary hot tub with clean and heated sea water and the sauna, you should bring along a bikini/swimsuit, flip-flops and maybe a woolly hat in the winter.
- Why does this tour last 3,5 or 6 hours?
That is because you can freely choose to include the experience of bathing in a stationary hot tub with clean and heated sea water. In this case the duration is 6 hours, otherwise 3 hours.

Definitely. It is a unique occasion to try something special and unforgettable.
- How can I include it in the tour?
Just let us know that you are curious about the experience when you book the guided tour.
- What if it rains/snows?
The tour will not be cancelled and it will not be possibile to claim a refund. The bike tour will run, if it rains/snows. The important thing is to dress appropriately. Upon request, we will be able to use the public transportation and/or rent a private car/minivan or take a taxi. The lunch break will be hold indoors, if the weather is bad. The bath experience, if included in the tour, will be taken in any case given that the water is hot (40 °C).
- Will there be time for a lunch break?
Yes, we certainly plan to hold a lunch break. In this very case, we will have a quick bite at Copenhagen Street Food. In the case of the shorter tour, we will only stop by for a drink or a quick snack. In the case of the longer tour, our break will be approximately 30-45 minutes long. If you prefer that we take care of arranging your lunch at a Danish restaurant so you can try typical food, let us know. We will be happy to satisfy your expectations. Please remember that in this case, the total duration of the tour will be longer and the final price will depend on the type of restaurant you choose.
